3.1 Milky Way / Milchstraße

Die Milchstraße ist unsere Heimatgalaxie — eine Balkenspiralgalaxie mit einem Durchmesser von etwa 100000 Lichtjahren. Sie enthält schätzungsweise 100–400 Milliarden Sterne und mindestens ebenso viele Planeten.

Das Sonnensystem befindet sich etwa 27000 Lichtjahre vom galaktischen Zentrum entfernt im Orionarm, einem Nebenarm zwischen dem Perseus- und dem Sagittarius-Arm. Eine Umrundung des galaktischen Zentrums dauert etwa 230 Millionen Jahre.

Im Zentrum der Milchstraße sitzt das supermassive Schwarze Loch Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) mit einer Masse von etwa 4 Millionen Sonnenmassen. Sein Schatten wurde 2022 vom Event Horizon Telescope abgebildet.

Die ESA-Mission Gaia kartiert die Positionen, Entfernungen und Bewegungen von fast 2 Milliarden Sternen und liefert die präziseste dreidimensionale Karte der Milchstraße.

The Milky Way is our home galaxy — a barred spiral galaxy with a diameter of about 100,000 light-years. It contains an estimated 100–400 billion stars and at least as many planets.

The Solar System is located about 27,000 light-years from the galactic center in the Orion Arm, a minor arm between the Perseus and Sagittarius Arms. One orbit around the galactic center takes about 230 million years.

At the center of the Milky Way lies the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) with a mass of about 4 million solar masses. Its shadow was imaged in 2022 by the Event Horizon Telescope.

ESA's Gaia mission is mapping the positions, distances, and motions of nearly 2 billion stars, producing the most precise three-dimensional map of the Milky Way.
