Astronomische Bildarchive bewahren die visuellen Schätze der Weltraumforschung — hochauflösende Aufnahmen von Planeten, Nebeln, Galaxien und kosmischen Strukturen, die von den leistungsfähigsten Teleskopen der Welt gewonnen wurden.

Das Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) der NASA ist seit 1995 die meistbesuchte astronomische Website weltweit. Jeden Tag wird ein neues Bild mit einer fachkundigen Erklärung veröffentlicht. Das Archiv umfasst über 10000 Einträge und ist eine unerschöpfliche Quelle für Bildung und Inspiration.

Die Bildarchive des Hubble Space Telescope (betrieben von ESA/Hubble und STScI) und des James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) bieten professionell aufbereitete Aufnahmen in höchster Qualität. Das ESO-Bildarchiv des European Southern Observatory dokumentiert Beobachtungen mit den weltweit leistungsfähigsten Bodenteleskopen — darunter das Very Large Telescope (VLT) und ALMA.

Für wissenschaftliche Arbeit bieten NASA Image and Video Library, die ESA Multimedia Gallery und Chandra X-ray Observatory Zugang zu Rohdaten und kalibrierten Bildern. Die Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) stellt den umfangreichsten digitalen Himmelsdurchmusterungskatalog mit über einer Milliarde Objekten bereit.

Alle großen Archive stehen unter offenen Lizenzen zur Verfügung — astronomische Bilder sind ein öffentliches Gut, finanziert durch öffentliche Mittel.

Astronomical image archives preserve the visual treasures of space research — high-resolution images of planets, nebulae, galaxies, and cosmic structures captured by the world's most powerful telescopes.

NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) has been the most visited astronomical website worldwide since 1995. Each day a new image is published with an expert explanation. The archive contains over 10,000 entries and is an inexhaustible source of education and inspiration.

The image archives of the Hubble Space Telescope (operated by ESA/Hubble and STScI) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) offer professionally processed images of the highest quality. The ESO image archive of the European Southern Observatory documents observations with the world's most powerful ground-based telescopes — including the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and ALMA.

For scientific work, the NASA Image and Video Library, the ESA Multimedia Gallery, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory provide access to raw data and calibrated images. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) provides the most comprehensive digital sky survey catalog with over one billion objects.

All major archives are available under open licenses — astronomical images are a public good, funded by public resources.
