1.19 Zodiacal Light / Zodiakallicht

Das Zodiakallicht ist ein schwaches, kegelförmiges Leuchten am Himmel, das nach Sonnenuntergang oder vor Sonnenaufgang entlang der Ekliptik sichtbar sein kann. Es entsteht durch die Streuung von Sonnenlicht an feinen Staubpartikeln in der Ebene des Sonnensystems.

Dieser interplanetare Staub stammt hauptsächlich von Kometenauflösungen und Asteroidenkollisionen. Die Staubscheibe erstreckt sich von der Sonnennähe bis jenseits der Marsbahn.

Das Zodiakallicht ist am besten von dunklen Standorten in tropischen und subtropischen Breiten zu sehen, wo die Ekliptik steil zum Horizont steht. Das Gegenschein ist ein verwandtes Phänomen — ein schwacher Lichtfleck am Gegenpunkt der Sonne.

The zodiacal light is a faint, cone-shaped glow visible along the ecliptic after sunset or before sunrise. It is caused by sunlight scattered by fine dust particles in the plane of the Solar System.

This interplanetary dust originates mainly from comet disintegration and asteroid collisions. The dust disk extends from near the Sun to beyond the orbit of Mars.

Zodiacal light is best seen from dark sites at tropical and subtropical latitudes where the ecliptic stands steeply above the horizon. The gegenschein is a related phenomenon — a faint patch of light at the anti-solar point.
