Die Venus ist der zweite Planet von der Sonne und der erdnächste planetare Nachbar. Ihr Durchmesser beträgt etwa 12100 Kilometer und ist damit nur geringfügig kleiner als der der Erde.

Venus besitzt eine extrem dichte Atmosphäre, die hauptsächlich aus Kohlendioxid besteht. Dichte Wolken aus Schwefelsäure bedecken den Planeten vollständig. Der starke Treibhauseffekt führt zu Oberflächentemperaturen von etwa 460 °C — Venus ist damit der heißeste Planet des Sonnensystems.

Eine Besonderheit der Venus ist ihre langsame und rückläufige Rotation. Ein Venustag dauert länger als ein Venusjahr.

Mehrere Raumsonden haben den Planeten untersucht, darunter Venera, Magellan und Venus Express.

Venus is the second planet from the Sun and Earth's closest planetary neighbor. With a diameter of about 12,100 km, it is similar in size to Earth.

Venus has an extremely dense atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide. Thick clouds of sulfuric acid completely cover the planet. A powerful greenhouse effect raises the surface temperature to around 460 °C, making Venus the hottest planet in the Solar System.

Venus rotates very slowly and in a retrograde direction. A single rotation takes longer than one orbit around the Sun.

Several spacecraft have studied the planet, including Venera, Magellan, and Venus Express.
