Neptun besitzt 16 bekannte Monde. Der bei weitem größte ist Triton mit einem Durchmesser von 2707 km. Triton ist der einzige große Mond im Sonnensystem, der seinen Planeten in retrograder Richtung umkreist — ein starker Hinweis darauf, dass er ein eingefangenes Objekt aus dem Kuipergürtel ist.
Tritons Oberfläche zeigt Geysire aus Stickstoffgas und dunklem Staub, eine extrem kalte Oberflächentemperatur von −235 °C und eine dünne Stickstoffatmosphäre. Die Oberfläche ist geologisch jung mit wenigen Einschlagskratern.

Neptune has 16 known moons. By far the largest is Triton, with a diameter of 2,707 km. Triton is the only large moon in the Solar System that orbits its planet in a retrograde direction — strong evidence that it was captured from the Kuiper Belt.
Triton's surface features geysers of nitrogen gas and dark dust, an extremely cold surface temperature of −235 °C, and a thin nitrogen atmosphere. The surface is geologically young with few impact craters.
